CBT and problem gambling: plain-English basics
What cognitive behavioural therapy often focuses on—educational summary, not a treatment plan.
Editorial article—not sponsored, not a substitute for professional advice. We do not sell services or earn commission from organisations mentioned.
We are not therapists. In the UK, clinical psychologists, CBT therapists, and counsellors may be registered with bodies such as the HCPC or BACP—verify anyone you work with.
CBT links thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. With gambling, it can mean mapping triggers (stress, boredom, arguments) and beliefs (“this time I’ll win it back”).
Example goals
- Delay impulses (e.g. 10–15 minutes).
- Replace gambling rituals with planned activities.
- Challenge unhelpful ideas about luck and “systems”.
Research often supports structured psychological therapies for gambling disorder alongside practical tools (money plans, self-exclusion). Your GP or local IAPT-style service can explain what is available where you live.
